O’BEIRNE’S IN HISTORY AND ART

In this Issue 4 we look again at some O’Beirne’s who made history. Most of this issue is devoted to Owen Beirne of Caldra, County Roscommon who was convicted of conspiracy in the murder of the Rev. John Lloyd of Smithhill, Elphin in the awful year of 1847. Owen was hanged in Roscommon Town on August 8, 1848. I came across this story a few years ago and have wanted to research it since. Although reasonably familiar with the history of much of Roscommon, I found this story substantially neglected or forgotten. Here I recount it from the newspapers of the day and try to put this tragedy in context. It’s a great credit, and much gratitude is due, to Roscommon County Library that I could do so with their help. To our outstanding contributors, in art and history, our grateful appreciation.
